Personality:Effy Stonem learned from a young age just what she was capable of with her looks, but that didn't guarantee an easy life. If anything, she's a lot more troubled than she lets on. While she is the main character for the show's third and fourth season, she is introduced first in the very first episode of the very first season, only about fifteen years old at the time. Even then many of her traits are exhibited from a young age.
She is clever and manipulative. She knows how to get what she wants, whether it be through using her looks like dressing a certain way to gain attention or through moving people like pieces. She's orchestrated many relationships, some asking for their help. She knows how quickly people fall for her, and in her own chaotic need, she is able to get what she wants. This is how eventually she pulls some insider trading off.
Effy doesn't give much away though. She's very stoic, and almost for the entirety of the first season she doesn't talk. When she does, she's the type of person that says little, but is able to say a lot with it. It's also how she keeps people at arm's length. It's her guard, and there's very few people who she lets in, for fear of being vulnerable and scared. Deep down she's had a lot of traumatic events happen to her such as being kidnapped and used against her brother, catching her mother cheating on her father, watching her father leave, watching her brother get hit by a bus, and going through psychotic depression that actually ends with her boyfriend's death.
She doesn't like to emotions and rarely shows them. Everything is usually subtle smirks, eye rolls, things that she can keep simple that hides how much she does feel. Because of this, she happens to lash out in big, destructive ways. She's afraid of people getting close to her, so she pushes them away. She's done this with both Cook and Freddie. With Cook she essentially fucked him and tried to keep it just there, even if it fucked with Cook and Freddie's friendship. When Freddie didn't seem to understand how dark she could get, she ends up going to Cook's, but she runs out into traffic, trying to feel something. The only time she really is happy is either when she's on drugs or when she's with people that get her, and she's able to open up, but that is a very rare thing.
By the time her series comes back again in season 7, Effy has matured out of the party girl scene, though she still needs the same control she had as a teenager. Now in her twenties and with a successful career, she tries to act above the sort of chaos she created and thrived upon when she was younger. But that part of her is still there. While her brother was always seen acting out of malice, for Effy it's almost a curiosity. She's grown up in a rather unstable environment and doesn't necessarily know what to do with stability when she has it.
As an adult she's still captivating and alluring. Her strengths are still her wit and cleverness. She takes on a job in a brokerage and learns how stocks and the economy work. She still is manipulative though, and it's what gets her in trouble. She tries to hold everything in control, trying to impress her boss who she's attracted to. She has high aspirations, and she's willing to do anything to get it, to feel like everything is stable, only making her life more and more unstable until once again it comes crashing down, and she's sentenced to prison due to insider trading.
